The decision to choose hospice care involves personal considerations because the care location significantly affects the experience. Patients can remain in their own homes during home-based hospice care while receiving professional medical and emotional support. This article explores the advantages of receiving hospice care within the comfort of your home.

During tough times, patients find solace when they remain in familiar surroundings with their beloved possessions. They experience emotional peace and reduced stress when they receive care in their own home environment. The combination of everyday habits merged with recognizable scents, noises, and items produces a safe personalized environment. Home care enables families to participate more fully in their loved one's care since they are not limited by visiting hours or confined to a clinical environment.

Home caregiving for a loved one helps to deepen familial bonds. Home care enables families to engage in deep conversations and create shared memories while spending quality time together, which can be limited during hospital stays. Family members can actively engage in their loved one’s care, which helps to establish stronger emotional connections during difficult times.

Maintaining a home environment allows patients to preserve their independence while sustaining control over their daily activities. Patients get to continue their usual activities and experience more personal moments, like watching their preferred TV show at home and spending time with their pets. Families benefit from this as well, by maintaining some normalcy. Balancing caregiving with everyday life reduces overwhelm and maintains priority focus on spending time together.

The Role of Hospice in Enhancing Quality of Life

Hospice care offers more than just medical help to those facing serious illnesses. It’s a place where they receive much-needed comfort, dignity, and compassion during the toughest moments of their lives. Aside from managing symptoms, hospices help patients and their families make the most of the time they have together. Let’s explore how hospices help bring peace and meaning to loved ones when it matters most.

           Providing Physical Comfort and Relief

One of the most important things hospice care does is help manage tough symptoms. Illnesses can come with challenges like pain, nausea, trouble breathing, or exhaustion. Hospices will have a team of doctors, nurses, and specialists that help create care plans designed to make life as comfortable as possible. This lets patients focus on spending meaningful moments with the people they love.

Give Emotional Care to Patients and Families

Hospice care provides emotional care, too. Grave illness can be overwhelming. It can bring up feelings like fear, sadness, or anger, and that’s completely normal. Compassionate hospice professionals, like those in Holding Hands Hospice, are always ready to listen and help you work through those emotions. Plus, they can offer counseling and resources to help families cope and prepare, making sure they feel supported every step of the way.

           Addressing the Patient’s Spiritual Needs

The end of life can bring up big questions about faith, purpose, and legacy. Hospice care understands this and takes spiritual support seriously. Hospice teams can help facilitate prayers, meditation, or meaningful conversations between patients and families. Moreover, chaplains or spiritual counselors are available to provide comfort and guidance, respecting each person’s unique beliefs.

           Supporting Families Through the Journey

Families can also benefit from hospice care. After all, taking care of a loved one can be exhausting, which is understandable. Hospices can offer respite care, allowing caregivers to take a break. They will also share helpful resources to guide families through the journey, explaining what to expect and how to cope. Moreover, families can receive grief counseling or can be redirected to support groups so they don’t feel alone upon the passing of a loved one.

Improving Quality of Life Through Compassion

Placing a loved one in a hospice is not about giving up. Instead, it’s about letting them live comfortably while being surrounded by care and compassion. At its heart, hospice care is about making life as meaningful as possible, even in difficult times. Hospices can ease patients’ discomfort and give them and their families the tools they need to navigate this journey with love and respect.

Hospice care provides patients the support they deserve, allowing them and their families to focus on cherishing meaningful moments during life’s final stages. How to Create Meaningful Moments with the Terminally Sick

Here at Holding Hands Hospice, many of our clients ask us for advice on how to make the remaining days count. Here’s a quick read that will help you give the nearly departed the send-off they deserve.

Help them Look Back at the Lives They’ve Led

It’s important to make sure your loved one sees the meaning in the moments that have come to pass. Remind them of their days at school, their first great love, and the moments that filled them with pride. The secret is in encouraging them to take a retrospective, and express the admiration they deserve when they open up.

Help them Recognize that They’re Still Living in the Now

It’s a fact we often forget ourselves, but our modern world offers limitless reasons to feel childlike wonder. Lead your loved one to appreciate the fact that although their life may be reaching its conclusion. They still belong to a time of miracles and marvels. Reintroduce them to wonder, whether it’s through an effects-driven blockbuster hit, a re-mastered version of a classic musical track, or a new gadget or device unlike anything that’s been on the market before.

Assure them that the Future Will Be Fine

The last thing on your loved one’s mind should be the practical worries they’ll be leaving behind. Give them the benefit of knowing that after their passing everything will be all right. That their friends and family will be well taken care of, and practical concerns i.e. financial is no problem. The easiest way to do this is by putting in the work and planning so that your assurances reflect the truth. Take care of your health, happiness, and finances — if not for your own sake, then for the peace of mind of your suffering loved one.
Understanding Pain Management: Difference of Acute and Chronic Pain

Pain is our body’s general indication that there is something wrong— either you are injured or sick. It’s one of our main concerns is to make sure that your loved ones have access to

           pain management

. Untreated pain, can change the way our mind and body function. However it affects everyone in different way, depending on our level of pain tolerance & how we react to it.

Here are the two most common types of pain that you should be aware of.

         Acute Pain

This is a mild to sharp pain that suddenly occurs and has a short duration. Acute pain is often associated to damages in the muscles or bones. Examples of acute pain are headaches, paper cut, hand burn, sprained ankle, and toothache. Generally, this can be treated quickly with prescribed pain relievers, but it still depends on the cause and severity of the pain.

         Chronic Pain

On other hand, lasts longer even after the injury has been healed. It leaves active signals, as the pain remains stubbornly resistant to medical treatment. This intermittent type of pain may last more than three months. Arthritis, deteriorating spine disks, endometriosis, and diabetic neuropathy are some of the examples of chronic pain.

Practical Ways to Help a Friend or Family in Grief

The death of a loved one can be the most difficult time for someone. As a friend or family member, it can be hard to console and help them since this is also the time when they feel most alone. It is understandable if you don’t know how to act and what to say or do since no one can fully comprehend someone’s grievances. It is however, important that you are there for that person. Here are a couple of easy and practical ways on how you can show that you are there by their side during this

           grief process

          .

Don’t Wait for Them to Ask for Help

Don’t be the friend who says “Call me if you need anything” or “Is there anything else I can help you with?” Instead, be that person who takes initiative and doesn’t need to wait for instructions — the reliable one. It is already hard for the grieving person to make sense of what is happening, so you should be able to identify simple needs without asking.

         Help in The Little Things

You can help by doing small, simple tasks like walking the dog, getting the mail, watering plants, and cleaning the dishes. In cleaning, however, be careful not to step on a last memory. For instance, don’t throw the trash unless you are certain that there is nothing there from the diseased. You might also accidentally wash clothes that have remaining scent of the person. It is better if you check with others first before stepping in.

Get Paper and Disposable Items for a While

Running out of tissue should be the last thing to happen during this time. You can make sure that the cabinets are well-stocked with tissue, toilet paper and paper bags. Also, since there will be guests, have paper cups and plates ready so the grieving person doesn’t have to worry about washing the dishes. It’s these little things that can help a lot.

         Take Note of Mementos

If you are not that familiar with the deceased person’s history, then now is the time. Take note of birthdays, anniversaries, and memorable dates because those are the times when the grieving person will be vulnerable and in need of comforting.

If you have a friend or family who is concerned about making their terminally ill loved one feel as comfortable as possible, know that we at Holding Hands Hospice are here to help.
When is the Right Time for Hospice?

Since time is of the essence when facing a terminal illness, the right time will always be as early as possible. Click here to learn some of the signs.

When is the Right Time for Hospice?

There will never be a right way or time to say goodbye to a loved one. Many people either hold on to the possibility of recovery despite the odds or fail to come to terms with the life-ending illness. This is why considering hospice care can be tough.

There will never be the right words to say to someone who is about to pass away. This is why some people fail to address the fact that they have to bid farewell until it’s too late. This is where hospice care comes in.

Hospice care can never control the perfect timing or give you the right words to say to your passing loved one. It can however, prepare you both for that moment and let you cherish the remaining days comfortably.

         When is The Right Time?

Here at Holding Hands Hospice, we are often asked for the right time to have their loved ones brought under hospice care. As per the general rule, a patient can be qualified if he/she has been diagnosed by physicians to have a life expectancy of six months and below, given the illness follows its natural course. If your loved one is not yet under that premise, the very fact that you are wondering about

means that you still need to prepare and think about your options. Since time is of the essence when facing a terminal illness, the right time will always be as early as possible.

Below are other signs that you can watch out for:

Hospice vs Palliative Care: Know the Difference

Hospice and palliative care are both treatments that focus on providing a comfortable atmosphere usually for those who are diagnosed with life-limiting illnesses. Here at Holding Hands Hospice, we encounter people who think that the two are the same when in fact they greatly differ in terms of objective, treatment, and setting. Below is a quick comparison to help you distinguish which one is apt for your loved one.

         Objective

Hospice care focuses on pain management and addresses the patient’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, while under it is palliative care which still provides active treatment on fighting the illness. Both are keen on giving symptom relief.

           Hospice services

include helping ease the hassle of daily routines like bathing, dressing, and feeding, while palliative still provides prescribed medication for curative purposes.

         Timing

A patient is qualified for hospice if he/she has been diagnosed by at least two physicians to have six months or less to live, given that the terminal illness will follow its natural course. Having hospice care is acknowledging that the patient has tried various treatments and medication and they have all proven to be futile. Meanwhile, a person can be admitted to palliative care during any stage of his/her illness as long as he/she is still undergoing curative treatment.

         Location

Hospice, usually consisting of a family caregiver, nurse, and volunteers who provide round-the-clock care, is commonly done at home. The hospice service provider often provides a pain management system to be administered at home. The only urgent need to have hospice done outside is if the patient is experiencing uncontrollable symptoms or if they lack caregivers.

Palliative care, on the other hand, is often overseen in hospitals, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes as the patient is still actively fighting the illness with nurses and physicians.

         Treatment

Since hospice focuses on improving the quality of end-of-life care, it can forego life-prolonging treatments which might have painful and stressful side effects. The goal is to have patients comfortable enough so they can settle all their affairs in order without concentrating on the inevitable issue of passing away. Palliative care cannot guarantee that same level of ease. What it can do is lessen the intensity of pain that the patience could experience in normal treatments.

Tips on Bedside Care: Providing a Peaceful and Positive Atmosphere for Patients

Here at Holding Hands Hospice, we understand that each patient under hospice care has certain needs and preferences that have to be met. Throughout their treatment, we always make it a point to make their way of life as comfortable as possible, especially in terms of creating a peaceful atmosphere.

If you are assisting a loved one go through this time, here are some tips you can do to provide bedside care.

Properly Schedule the Task and Shifting of Helpers

If you have friends and family who are more than willing to help out in taking care of your loved one, your responsibility is to make sure that they are capable, the patient will appreciate their presence, and their time if they are properly managed. Ask for their schedules and preferred time to come and visit so you can develop shifts. Also, you can ask professionals such as nurses, doctors, and caregivers to demonstrate and give tips on how to provide care without troubling the patient.

Install Side Rails and Other Safety Accessories If Necessary

Typically the hospice service provider will give you recommendations and requirements on how you can make the living space safe and comfortable. You might need to install side rails or handle bars and buy additional equipment.

Learn How to Smoothly Maneuver Lowering, Raising the Bed

          During

           hospice care

, many resort to using a

           hospital bed

because of its mechanism to easily raise and lower the head and foot part. This is useful especially for those who can no longer move or turn well. This can also help those with heart or respiratory problems as inclining the bed can ease their breathing a bit.

It is also better if you can position the bed in the middle of the room or allow a path where you can walk on both sides of the bed so you won’t have problems reaching.

Set the Mood with Sound and Music

Playing relaxing music at a low volume can help lighten the patient’s mood. For others, playing certain songs can evoke positive memories and help them forget about the pain. Meanwhile, some prefer having background noise like television or radio to lessen the anxiety.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions

A patient’s time in a hospice is uncertain, so while they can still communicate with you, try to engage them with questions. Learn more from them and at many times they appreciate visitors initiating the conversation. Of course, you just have to time it depending on their mood and condition.

Here at Holding Hands Hospice, we strongly believe that each person who is diagnosed with a life-limiting illness deserves all forms of care available. This is why each patient, whether in a home or in any other living facility, is given options on what kind of

           hospice care

          they need.

Below are the four levels that you can take a look at. Take note that the duration of each varies. One patient may experience all four in a week, while the other might only need one in their entire hospice care.

            Routine Home Care

           :

This involves a scheduled set of visits, check-ups, and medication distribution for the patient. Routine home care is advisable when the patient’s symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, bleeding, pain, and unbearable agitation, can still be controlled. A team of registered nurse, social worker, hospice aid, chaplain, counsellor, physician, and bereavement specialist are usually involved in the routine visits.

           Continuous Care:

Like routine, continuous care is also done at home. The difference is that this type of care is only advisable when the patient’s symptoms can no longer be controlled and is already severe. There is usually a hospice nurse available around the clock. This is only for times of crisis or within three to five days as per Medicare.

           Inpatient Care:

The main difference between continuous and inpatient care is that the latter is done within a facility as both are only advisable for patients with uncontrolled symptoms. During inpatient care, the hospice team become aggressive in treating the patient’s pain and symptoms. This can involve regular assessment on their condition and medication.

            Respite Care

           :

Because most hospice care involves living at home, respite care only happens when the nurse, caregiver, and/or family member in charge of tending to the patient needs to take a break or when the house needs repairs or cleaning. During this period, which can last up to five days according to

           Medicare

, the patient is given complete treatment similar to routine home care in a hospice home or assisted living facility.
