Common University Park Hospice Questions

Below are some answers to commonly asked questions.

  • What is hospice?

Hospice brings comprehensive support to people living with a terminal illness, right in their own home. The focus is on comfort, quality time, and honoring the things that matter most. Our care team includes doctors, nurses, home health aides, social workers, counselors, and volunteers, all working together and sharing one mission: putting you and your family’s peace of mind first.

    Our hospice services include:

    • Regular at-home visits from nurses and home health aides

    • Medical equipment and supplies

    • Medications for symptom and pain relief

    • Respite care for caregivers

    • Crisis management as needed

    • Bereavement and grief support

    • Coordinated care in assisted living facilities and other group homes

  • Who qualifies for hospice?

Hospice services are available whenever comfort-focused support is needed, and no time limits are set by us at Holding Hands Hospice. Usually, hospice patients have a prognosis from a doctor of six months or less to live if the illness follows its expected course. Patients need to agree to focus on comfort rather than curative treatment, but if someone lives longer than expected, or if a patient decides they still want to continue receiving comfort care, hospice can continue.

  • Is hospice care just for older adults?

Nope. University Park hospice care is available to anyone at any age with a life-limiting illness.

  • Do I have to stay in hospice until I pass away?

Not at all. If you start to feel better or just want a different type of care, you can leave hospice anytime. You’re also welcome to come back to our care in the future, if you choose.

  • Do you offer 24/7 care?

Nurses and aides make regular visits as part of your routine care, and if you need urgent or around-the-clock assistance, we’re here to help. Family and private caregivers also play a major role in day-to-day support.

  • What if I live in a nursing or assisted living facility?

We will work closely with your facility to help provide hospice support wherever you are located in University Park.

  • Does insurance cover hospice?

Private insurance companies and HMOs offer hospice benefits. Medicare for individuals age 65 years or older receive hospice benefits. A person with a prognosis of six months or less will receive full Medicaid benefits if they wish to participate in the Texas Medicaid Hospice Program. Under this program, patients electing hospice care agree to waive their rights to other Medicaid services that include treatments to cure their terminal illness. Consequently, patients may still receive other forms of treatment that are not related to their terminal medical condition.

  • Can pain and symptoms be managed at home?

Absolutely. Hospice support is designed to address pain, discomfort, and symptoms right where you live. Our nurses are available 24/7 for urgent needs, and our doctors work to keep prescriptions up-to-date as needed.

  • What happens for families after someone dies?

We’re still here. Our grief programs provide personal support, group sessions, resources, and referrals to help families find healing and hope after loss.
